The Program Executive Office for Intelligence, Electronic Warfare & Sensors (PEO IEW&S) expanded its operational portfolio with the transition of Program Manager Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PM PNT) and its subordinate organizations.

Following approval from Steffanie Easter, former Assistant Secretary of the of the Army Acquisition Logistics and Technology (ASA(ALT)), PM PNT came under operational and administrative control of PEO IEW&S on 28 September.

“We are thrilled to welcome PM PNT back to the PEO IEW&S Team,” said Maj. Gen. Kirk Vollmecke. “Their equipment and knowledge are both essential to Soldiers around the globe, expanding our capabilities to deliver now.”

The newly transitioned PM will join other critical platforms under the PEO IEW&S umbrella, including the Distribution Common Ground System — Army, the Electronic Warfare Planning and Management Tool, aerial intelligence surveillance systems and a host of other sensors and systems dedicated to force protection as well as overall intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.

PM PNT, formerly a direct report to ASA(ALT), brings with it a chartered Product Manager, Assured PNT (A-PNT); two Product Leads, Resiliency and Software Assurance Measures (RSAM) and the Emerging Capabilities Office (ECO); and the Global Positioning System Army (GPS-Army) Directorate.

The A-PNT program will employ a system of systems (SoS) architecture that focuses on optimization of size, weight, and power for dismounted and mounted platforms, the ability to protect access to PNT, platform PNT distribution efficiency, and the ability to manage PNT modernization at the platform level. The A-PNT SoS consists of four systems designed to work as an integrated capability with the goal to achieve assured PNT in nearly all GPS-challenged environments, across all formations, and Warfighting functions.

RSAM will improve the resiliency and software assurance for GPS receivers until Military-Code and A-PNT are fully implemented. RSAM is a software improvement patch for Selective Availability Anti-Spoofing Module-based GPS receivers to include the Defense Advanced GPS Receiver and the embedded Ground Based GPS Receiver Applications Module, which are managed by the Air Force. PM PNT is currently coordinating efforts with various PEOs, PMs, the Air Force, system integrators, and other government organizations to release RSAM updates.

The ECO is responsible for Project TITAN, providing platform PNT assurance with point protection and electronic support sensor capability in support of the Army’s Rapid Capabilities Office. Project TITAN is a rapid fielding initiative that works to provide the best available solution with currently available capabilities to fight against limited threats in a specific theater of operation. Specifically, it is expected to enhance the ability for the U.S. Army Europe Commander to maneuver in a GPS challenged environment.

The GPS-Army Directorate is a dedicated Army team embedded within the Air Force Space Missile Center at Los Angeles Air Force Base, CA. It serves as the Army liaison to the Air Force’s GPS Directorate, providing Army insight and position to GPS changes and modifications.

PM PNT leads the Army in developing and integrating PNT technology and also collaborates with the other Department of Defense Services to deliver interoperable, reliable products. All products will provide real-time secure PNT services for a variety of combat and combat support field missions including precision fires, situational awareness, command and control, and timing and network synchronization. These capabilities will provide the Soldier with the ability to access accurate and trusted time and position information — a critical enabler for almost all Army warfighting functions and systems.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
