KABUL, Afghanistan – A crowd gathered Sunday for a ceremony dedicating the Major General Harold J. Greene Building at International Security Assistance Force Headquarters in Kabul.
Greene, the deputy commanding general of Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan, was killed Aug. 5 while visiting a training academy for Afghan soldiers in Kabul. The building stands as a testament to the impact Greene had here at ISAF and throughout his lengthy military career.
“The naming of this building is not to commemorate his death, but rather to remind us of what Maj. Gen. Greene accomplished while he was alive,” said Gen. Joseph F. Dunford, Jr., commander of ISAF. “He was at the forefront of our main effort, helping Afghans. He was not about telling you what you wanted to hear, but what you needed to.”
Greene was a staunch advocate for research and development, and for using these tools to provide soldiers with the best equipment possible
“We have two responsibilities,” Dunford explained. “The first is to continue the work that Harold Greene was so passionate about. And the second is to keep his memory alive.”
The building with Greene’s namesake is a residential facility housing service members and civilians from throughout the multinational coalition at ISAF.
“This building is an enduring memory of his contribution to the campaign,” said Dunford. “He lived here and now we will keep this building alive with the spirit of Harold Greene.”
